Everyone had a fabulous time and is looking forward to playing there regularly. We estimate that over the course of 2 ½ hours, 65 pugs and upwards of 120 humans passed through the doors eating and partying. While no amount would ever be “enough” in my eyes, we were able to raise $515 for AH through per pug fees ($5.00 each) and our donation raffle (to be a regular happening at every one of our AH Soho events). We also collected a few product donations (case of paper towels, garbage bags, Windex, dishwasher detergent, etc.).

So, needless to say, I think this was the start to a beautiful relationship!

Vanessa Williams attended Animal Haven's ribbon cutting this morning amidst a bevy of paparazzi. She first worked with Animal Haven five years ago and was pleased to be visiting again for this special event which was in conjunction with Home Again.

Two teams of veterinarians and vet techs were on hand to offer free microchipping of both cats and dogs. Home Again gave all participants free activation as well as a first year of free membership.

Back in April when Jennifer Bristol, Associate Director of Animal Haven, told my mom that we were going to be honored at this year's Going Home Luncheon, my mom cried.

And then when Jennifer emailed mom the names of the other two honorees -- Lynn Redgrave and Anne Craig -- she cried again.

And THEN when Marcello Forte, Executive Director of Animal Haven, presented us with the Florence Brenner Award she cried AGAIN!

I truly believe she has "issues." But maybe all humans have these weird issues! I mean, why all the crying over such GOOD things?!

Nonetheless, mom made a lifetime commitment to Animal Haven so there is no turning back now!

Some psychologist said that there is no true altruistic act and that philanthropy is basically selfish. If these things are true, I have never been so proud to be selfish!

Animal Haven to Celebrate 40th Anniversary with Annual Going Home Luncheon

The Florence Brenner Award to be Presented to

New York, NY, October 3, 2007– Animal Haven Shelter announced today that the Florence Brenner Award will be presented to award-winning actress Lynn Redgrave, FOX 5’s Anne Craig and New York City’s own canine socialite and fundraiser, Lenny the Pug.

The awards will be presented at Animal Haven’s 40th Going Home Luncheon, which will celebrate the shelter’s 40th anniversary.

The honorees were chosen for their dedication to their own pets and the lives of those without homes:

Lynn Redgrave, Award-winning actress and Animal Haven adopter

Anne Craig, FOX 5 reporter

This year’s special canine honoree is Lenny the Pug, who, along with help from his guardian, Lin Randolph, organizes an annual canine birthday celebration that benefits Animal Haven Soho, the new adoption center and pet boutique.

The luncheon will also include a performance by Catherine Hickland (One Life to Live) and appearances by Jennifer Bassey (All My Children), Marj Dusay (Guiding Light), Dick DeBartolo (ABC and Mad Magazine), Spencer Ross (MSG Sportscaster) and Louise Sorel (Days of our Lives). The day’s activities will also feature a silent and live auction.

The Going Home Luncheon will be held Sunday, October 21 at noon at Dante Caterers located at 75-07 31st Avenue in East Elmhurst, NY. Tickets begin at $75. Tickets can be purchased at www.animalhavenshelter.org

Animal Haven places cats and dogs in loving homes, as well as give lifetime care for those who cannot be placed.

My great-grandma passed away last week. While both mommy and I are sad and will miss "Namaw" greatly, she will continue to live in our hearts.

My great-grandparents passed their love for both people and animals to my grandmum who passed that love to my mommy. And well, that means I have been blessed by three generations of animal-lovin' folks who view my well-being as important as their own (even more important at times).

Her presence here on earth will be sorely missed by many, but her spirit will live on in all of us!

Hi Lin and Lenny!

I was just wondering if you could post this to the members of our group.

I just want to publicly thank Dennis Buonagura for his help in rescuing our new little pug "Guinness" from a going to the pound. If you don’t know Dennis, you may know his fawn female pug Hazel from Meet Ups on the UWS.

As you may remember, he asked for all of our help in finding a fawn female pug a home before her owners moved away. After communicating with Dennis for a few weeks we arranged to meet last week. I had been thinking about getting a sister for my black female Pug, Bailey who is three years old for a while. Our meeting went well and we arranged to meet at the UWS meet up last week to take “Guinness” home. The first few days she was busy getting adjusted to life at our house, but a week later it’s as if she has been with us for years. Bailey is so happy to have a sister to play with and Guinness is so happy to have a family who loves her and gives her the attention that she needs. Scott and I are so proud of the newest addition to our family!

I wanted to just share some pictures of Guinness and Bailey and once again thank Dennis for connecting us with our new little baby GUINNESS! I hope to see you all soon at future meet ups!

Peanut the Magnificent Pug!

Peanut initially appeared on Pet Star and traveled around the USA until his family decided they could no longer take care of him. Peanut came into rescue in February of 2007 and was adopted by his foster family, The Knapps.

The Knapps did not condone any unsafe or harsh training practices and were very reluctant to let Peanut do his tricks but he took a liking to Craig and wanted to do tricks for him everyday. Craig decided to expand Peanut's routine, but would only do whatever Peanut was comfortable with learning.

Today, Peanut's training regimen consists of taking long walks to get focused and his rewards are usually baby carrots. Peanut is never yelled at or treated badly and gets to choose whether he wants to do a trick or move on to the next one, but Peanut has showbiz in his blood and loves to perform!

Peanut is 5 years old and is currently living out the rest of his life at The Pug Hotel with The Knapps and his six pug brothers and sisters who love him very much! Peanut's profits go to PDE Research because Peanut cares about finding a cure for PDE!

Peanut's next public appearance will be at The New York City Pug Meetup Group's Annual "Giving Thanks & Helping Others" party to benefit PDE Research. The party is scheduled on Sunday, November 11, noon-2:00 p.m. at Animal Haven Soho in New York City.

Mommy went upstate to help raise money for PDE Research!

So, yesterday my mommy went "upstate" all by herself! I am so proud of her...for a few reasons:

1. She tried something new.
2. She helped a friend.
3. She helped raise money for PDE Research

Mommy's friend, Eev, started a fund for PDE Research. All the monies raised go directly to Dr. Kimberly Greer (Texas A&M) who is currently the only person devoting their entire research to PDE. The fund is not yet a 501(c)3, but Eev is working on that!

So, what is PDE? PDE stands for Pug Dog Encephalitis. This is a horrible disease that affects only the Pug breed which means very little funding exists to support those who wish to do research. And this means there are very few answers to the thousands of questions pug lovers have. Researchers "believe" it is passed genetically, but until more money is raised and more folks are willing to allow an autopsy/necropsy of their dearly departed PDE affected pug we will be left with very few answers.

There are currently no tests for PDE and very few veterinarians know anything about this deadly disease that haunts the Pug breed. Symptoms are similar to epilepsy and inner-ear imbalances, but currently no amount of medication and/or treatment can save a pug's life if s/he has PDE.

Many folks think, "My pug is happy and healthy and I do all the right things so s/he definitely doesn't have PDE." Sadly, nothing in this world is 100% guaranteed. As there are no tests for PDE, pugs are regularly bred and sold by backyard breeders and puppymills to uneducated families and pet shops without a second thought to the potential of their being a PDE "carrier" (in addition to the multitude of potential health issues)

So, how can you help?

Do NOT ever purchase pug puppies from pet shops
Do NOT purchase pug puppies from a breeder without doing extensive research into both theirs and their adult pug's histories
Spay/neuter your pug!
Help raise awareness of this horrible disease by educating yourself, friends and family
Help raise funds for more research by donating directly, purchasing items that donate to PDE research and attend events that benefit PDE Research

What if my pug passes away from PDE?

Please consider all the lives you could save by allowing Dr. Greer and her team to autopsy/necropsy your pug. Dr. Greer's dedicated team takes great care to guarantee that all pugs are handled with the utmost care and love. Comprehensive reports are included when your pug's cremated remains are returned to you.

Your pug does not have to die in vain! S/he can leave a legacy of knowing that s/he potentially helped to save the lives of thousands of other pugs.

So, my mommy finally got around to starting my friend Alison's newest book, "Through Thick and Thin." She has only read the first chapter and is completely hooked. She does wonder, however, if her friends and family in the Midwest would find it as amusing as she can't imagine them understanding the social requirements of Froggyboo (Bugaboo) strollers and velcro closure yoga shoes (vs. real running sneakers). Nonetheless, she is looking forward to more quiet time this weekend so she can continue to read. That is definitely a good sign!

Pug Dog Encephalitis: Facts Not Fiction

Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE) is probably a Pug owners greatest concern and worst fear. Unfortunately, very little is known about this disease, however what is known, for certain, is presented here for the benefit of Pug owners and those considering Pugs as their breed of choice. Please note that this article serves only as an introduction to, and general description of PDE. For information on PDE in greater detail, consult veterinary sources found in your local library or on reputable internet sites.

What we do know about PDE is that it is an inflammation of the brain that strikes adolescent Pugs usually between the ages of 2 and 3. What causes this inflammation, in Pugs, and at this age range in particular is all unknown to this date.

Symptoms:

Seizures are the primary symptom of PDE, however it is vitally important to understand and remember that seizure activity in Pugs does not necessarily indicate PDE is the cause. Pugs may also suffer seizures from Epilepsy, exposure to toxic chemicals or gasses and for unknown and unexplained reasons.

Lethargy and loss of muscle coordination are two symptoms that do, but don’t always precede seizure activity caused by PDE. Similar to the presence of seizure activity, neither of these two symptoms together or apart definitively indicates PDE is the cause. Lethargy is a symptom to nearly all illnesses that can strike a dog ranging from a common infection to something more serious. A loss of muscle coordination likewise can indicate other problems such as neurological issues and a side effective to convulsive activity brought out by inner ear disturbances such as Vestibular Disease or ruptured ear drums.

Pacing in circles before or between seizures is a fairly common symptom of PDE. The Pug will pace in a circular motion over and over again for a prolonged period. Head pressing against objects such as walls or furniture is another symptom seen with PDE. This pressing activity normally occurs frequently and for a prolonged period of time. Pugs suffering from PDE may also exhibit signs of agitation and/or aggression whereby the Pug appears disturbed for no apparent reason or aggression that is uncharacteristic of our Pugs and comes on suddenly also for no apparent reason.

Two Classifications of PDE:

Slow Progressive: This classification of PDE features seizure activity and sometimes the additional symptoms preceding the seizure activity. The seizures will strike, last anywhere from just a few seconds to a few minutes and then recur in a matter of days or weeks. In between these seizures, the Pug will return to normal and demonstrate no symptomatic characteristics associated with PDE.

Rapid Progression: This classification of PDE features seizure activity that is often more frequent, but not always. In between the seizure activity however, the Pug does not return to normal but instead does demonstrate symptomatic characteristics associated with PDE. These characteristics between seizures are commonly depression, bewilderment, disorientation and signs of lacking muscular coordination such as having difficulty walking.

The end result of either classification of PDE unfortunately is the same. Whether it strikes in the slow progressive or the rapid progressive form, PDE will eventually kill the Pug. Those Pugs that have been diagnosed with PDE and said to have survived are widely believed to have been misdiagnosed, or not diagnosed conclusively.

Difficulty of Learning More About PDE:

Broad Symptoms: Understanding the way seizure activity, lethargy and a lack of muscular coordination can indicate any number of health issues explains the difficulty veterinarians often have diagnosing PDE. While a favoring of one leg while running is a tell tale sign of Luxating Patella, or a crater in the cornea a sure sign of a corneal ulcer, the symptoms of PDE can span a wide range of possible causes making this disease difficult to diagnose.

Sudden Death: PDE normally strikes quickly, and frequently either kills the Pug or results in the owner agreeing to put his/her dog to sleep. This leaves little or no time to run tests such as CAT scans or MRI’s that might possibly help veterinary research learn more about this disease. Autopsies and tissue donation to veterinary research helps to provide some means of examination into PDE, however the speed at which PDE strikes and results in death surely makes researching the disease all the more difficult.

Pug Specific: Were this a disease to strike dogs of all or many breeds, more urgency would exist to research PDE so that a cause and cure could be found. But this is, after all, Pug Dog Encephalitis, not Pug/Poodle/Pomeranian/Pit Bull Dog Encephalitis and thus the urgency simply does not exist.

For better or worse however, with the increasing popularity of Pugs has come an increase in the veterinary research activity into PDE. This is though a bittersweet situation as this increase in the Pugs’ popularity has also resulted in an increase in the frequency of PDE, something that has led to support the already present belief that there is a genetic component to the disease.

So, I work really hard at making my mommy work really hard to improve my canine community not only here in my hometown of New York City, but everywhere in the world! However, this is not going to do us animals any good if you humans continue to poison the planet!

Yes, yes, I am on my soapbox again today, but I am not going to apologize! I pledge to give up one treat for every step you take towards making your life more green. From small things like recycling to medium things like taking public transportation (or walking/bicycling) to large things like powering your home with the sun or wind, we can all do something within our means. I'm writing today to tell you about a groundbreaking class action lawsuit filed yesterday on behalf of members of The Humane Society of the United States against a notorious Florida puppy mill dog dealer.

This lawsuit is the latest step in a multi-year legal battle by The HSUS against a company called Wizard of Claws and its owners in response to widespread reports that this store routinely sells sick and dying puppy mill puppies to unsuspecting customers.

The suit underscores Rule #1 when looking for a new pet: Don't buy unless you see first-hand where the pet came from.

The suit -- filed in Broward County Circuit Court on behalf of more than 100 Wizard of Claws' former customers -- is based on numerous consumer complaints about Wizard of Claws misleading customers and selling unhealthy puppy mill puppies in blatant violation of Florida law. The suit claims that puppies purchased in their stores had serious genetic defects or fell sick or died within days of purchase, and that the retailer refused to either reimburse customers or pay expensive veterinary bills.

The purpose of this class action suit is to prevent Wizard of Claws from selling puppy mill puppies to unsuspecting buyers. And we want to send a powerful signal to other pet stores and Internet retailers that business as usual cannot continue.

With your help, we can advance our fight to stop puppy mills. As The HSUS prepares to battle in court, here are some actions you can take right now:

	If you are thinking of bringing a new dog into the family, or know someone who is, request a free copy of our puppy buyer's guide for information on how to find reputable breeders, shelters, and rescue groups.

1. Do Not Buy Your Puppy From a Pet Store
That puppy who charmed you through the pet shop window has most likely come from a large-scale, substandard commercial breeding facility, commonly known as a puppy mill. In these facilities, parent dogs are caged and bred as often as possible, and give birth to puppies who could have costly medical problems you might not become aware of until after you bring your new pet home.

2. Make Adoption Your First Option
If you’re looking to make a puppy part of your family, check your local shelters first. Not only will you be saving a life, but you will ensure that your money is not going to support a puppy mill. There are many dogs waiting for homes in shelters all across the country―and an estimated one in four is a purebred! Your second option is breed rescue. If your heart is set on a specific breed you haven’t been able to find in a shelter, you can do an Internet search for a breed-specific rescue organization.

3. Know How to Recognize a Responsible Breeder
If you’ve exhausted your options for adopting and are choosing to buy from a breeder, remember that responsible breeders have their dogs’ interests in mind. They are not simply interested in making a sale, but in placing their pups in good homes. A responsible breeder should screen you as thoroughly as you screen them! Read the ASPCA’s responsible breeding statement to find out more about how a responsible breeder behaves.

4. See Where Your Puppy Was Born and Bred
One sign that you are speaking to an unscrupulous breeder is that they will not let you see the facility in which your puppy was born. Always ask to see the breeding premises and to meet both parents (or at least the mother) of the puppy you want to take home. You should also ask for an adoption contract that explains―in terms you understand―the breeder’s responsibilities, health guarantee and return policy.

5. Internet Buyers, Beware!
Buying a puppy from the Internet is as risky as buying from a pet store. If you buy a puppy based on a picture and a phone call, you have no way of seeing the puppy’s breeding premises or meeting his parents. And those who sell animals on the Internet are not held to the Animal Welfare Act regulations―and so are not inspected by the USDA.

6. Share Your Puppy Mill Story with the ASPCA
If you have—or think you have—purchased a puppy-mill puppy, please tell us your story. Every bit of evidence gives us more power to get legislation passed that will ban puppy mills.

7. Speak Out!
Inform your state and federal legislators that you are disturbed by the inhumane treatment of dogs in puppy mills, and would like to see legislation passed that ensures that all animals bred to be pets are raised in healthy conditions. You can keep up-to-date about current legislation to ban puppy mills by joining the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade.

8. Tell Your Friends
If someone you know is planning on buying a puppy, please direct them to our puppy mill information at ASPCA.org. Let them know that there are perfectly healthy dogs in shelters waiting to be adopted.

9. Think Globally
Have a webpage, a MySpace page or a blog? Use these powerful tools to inform people about puppy mill cruelty by adding a link to our puppy mill information at ASPCA.org.

10. Act Locally!
When people are looking to buy or adopt a pet, they will often ask the advice of their veterinarian, groomer or pet supply store. Download and print our flyers and ask to leave them in the offices of your local practitioners.

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the 4 pups. And set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of little boy.

"Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your puppies."

"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, "These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer.

"I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?"

"Sure," said the farmer. And with that he let out a whistle.

"Here, Dolly!" he called.

Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up....

"I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the runt.

The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would."

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands."

With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup. Holding it carefully handed it to the little boy.

"How much?" asked the little boy.

"No charge," answered the farmer, "there's no charge for love."

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.

He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He And the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.

"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up."

The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.

"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets." The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence.

As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the man. "Do you have any water?" Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in."

"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.

"There should be a bowl by the pump."

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.

The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.

When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.

"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.

"This is Heaven," he answered.

"Well, that's confusing," the Traveler said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"

No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind."

I will tell you a secret. My mommy has a bit of an obsession with shoes. She stops and gazes at red soled Louboutins and bejeweled Zanottis. She dreams of the perfect mule. And before my time, she had a walk-in closet filled with immaculately cared for shoes arranged by color in their original boxes and carefully labeled with polaroid photos of the precious goods hidden inside.

So, to say that mommy considers it a "good" day when she dons a new pair of shoes is an understatement. But, there is a new sheriff in town and his name is LENNY! Despite mommy's excitement with her new pair of Tory Burch Revas (a birthday gift from Grandmum and Aunt Lisa), the law is now that I check them out and give my approval.

I looked at them. Nice color...I like shiny things.
I sniffed them. Nothing like Chicken Paillard, but ok.
I licked them. Not the best thing I've tasted, but not offensive.
I listened to them as mommy walked around her workplace with me. Very quiet...won't scare off the cute chicks so VERY GOOD!

Okay, so I know better than to try to paw at mommy's shoes -- old or new -- but they look like they would feel soft.

So, I gave them two paws up!

North Shore Animal League: Three Tears and a Smile

Recently, North Shore Animal League America rescued three Chihuahuas, who we suspect were the inbred litter from backyard breeders. All three of these precious little bundles, only 10 weeks old, have no front legs. Physical deformities such as these are often the result of irresponsible breeding. While we are happy that the breeders chose to surrender these puppies to a shelter instead of fates far worse, we are saddened that the terrible misfortune of the deformities had to happen at all.

The terrible reality of backyard breeding is nothing new. We see it over and over again and the heartbreaking sadness of it never subsides. Backyard breeders are those who breed their animals for various inappropriate reasons. Often, they do not have bad intentions or even realize that they are contributing to a huge problem, but they are. Backyard breeders often breed animals with the intentions of making money or just imagining how cute it would be if their pet had babies, and what wonderful babies they'd make.

BUT:

~ Where will those babies go?

~ Who will take care of them?

~ Is it safe for the mother animal?

~ Will the babies survive; will it be without incident or harmful repercussions?

It is a common misconception that puppy mills make up the majority of irresponsible breeding. Though puppy mills do contribute, backyard breeding actually makes up more than half of irresponsible breeding. Too often, irresponsible breeding churns out imperfect or unwanted animals who eventually wind up abandoned in shelters, left out to die, sold as healthy pets in pet stores, victims in research laboratories, or wind up as pets to irresponsible owners who perpetuate irresponsible breeding.

North Shore Animal League America rescued the Chihuahua puppies as part of our out-of-state rescue mission. One of our sister shelters, who did not have the proper facilities to care for the pups, reached out and asked for our help. They knew that without the proper care and environment, the puppies would most likely end up being euthanized. Without hesitation, we scooped up the puppies and rushed them to our advanced facility, eager to get them evaluated medically and emotionally.

When you first see these little guys, it seems like a veil of tears. They didn't have to be this way, and it seems so unfair. They are so tiny and seem helpless. How will they ever manage? But after a few moments, those tears of sorrow and dismay turn to a smile of hope and faith. They can manage - they will manage, and North Shore Animal League America is going to help them.

Two females and a male - all in good health - are hopping around, playing, barking, pouncing, and learning to use their back legs to stand upright. We have named them Venus de Milo, Carmen and Pablo. They have no idea that they are disadvantaged and seem very happy to have each other and to be alive. They are as sweet as can be and get around surprisingly well.

Ban Raccoon Dog Fur and Demand Proper Labeling!

The federal Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Enforcement Act, H.R. 891, would require that all apparel containing any quantity of fur is accurately labeled—regardless of the fur’s monetary value—and also ban completely the sale and import of fur from raccoon dogs, members of the dog family native to China killed in large numbers for their fur.

Under current law, products containing quantities of fur valued under $150 can be sold in American stores without accurate labels. Consumers with ethical objections or allergies to fur may think a lack of a label means that they’re buying “faux” fur—but sadly, this is not always true.

What You Can Do

Dear New York Advocates,

Thanks to your efforts, the New York legislature restored funding to two crucial animal welfare programs during last-minute negotiations to finalize a state budget by the April 1 deadline. The budget now awaits Governor Spitzer’s signature!

The governor’s initial budget proposal would have cut $150,000 from the Animal Population Control Fund and $100,000 from the Pet Dealer Licensing Law to instead pay the salaries and fringe benefits of state employees. These cuts would have devastated these programs, even though our state’s need for low-cost spay/neuter services, and consumer complaints about pet dealers, continues to rise.

What You Can Do
Your letters calling for action were answered, and now it’s only appropriate to thank those who helped save New York’s animal program-friendly budget.

Please visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center to send a letter of thanks to Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and your own state representatives.

Animal Haven's Mobile Adoption Program

Animal Haven's mobile adoption program enables them to travel throughout the greater New York area to hold site specific adoption events and bring the animals right to the public. This is an extremely successful program and their mobile events regularly result in the adoption of several pets. They usually bring 8-12 dogs as well as 10-15 cats and kittens and accept many adoption applications on-site. This shelter on wheels brings awareness of the pet overpopulation problem to multiple communities that would otherwise not go to a shelter. It is an great way to educate the public.

Corporate adoption events
Animal Haven would love to plan an adoption event sponsored by and/or run by your coworkers and staff. The event can be in-house for your company or for the public. O Magazine and the Times Square Business Improvement District held the first of these events.

This is the final countdown to my 2nd Annual Birthday Benefit for Animal Haven! I accompanied mommy to her workplace today so that we could complete our event preparations. In the photos above you will see how very hard I worked to make the 28 festive gift baskets which will be raffled off at my party on Sunday.

Okay, so I didn't actually make any of the baskets, but I did make mental notes for which baskets I will tell my daddy to purchase tickets.

Okay, so I am a bit bigger, a lot wiser and have one leg less than in the photo (above), but I still have my adorable winter coat and boots (both a size larger now)! Thank goodness because all the weather humans are predicting a heap of snow within the next 36 hours.

Tonight I attended a very special event. I was invited to the faux grand opening of Animal Haven Soho which was filmed and will be used as part of an episode of Fine Network's "Opening Soon." I was honored to have been invited and thoroughly enjoyed partying with all of the attending canines (many of whom were adopted from Animal Haven). And well, I was treated to a few bits of cheese and a refreshing bottle of water during the festivities which completely sealed the deal.

I must say that I looked quite "dapper" (as Fred, manager of Animal Haven Soho, described me) in my brand new tuxedo with tails. Sadly, I do not have a photo to post tonight because mommy forgot to take her camera with us. I'll be sure to post a photo sometime soon though!

Well, I'm pooped! It has been an exhausting, but fun-filled evening. Until tomorrow!

Fame...good or bad?

So tell me...is fame a good thing?

Definitely good: I received some good news from my event publicist, Lori Zelenko of LSZ Communications, today. The Village Voice is going to run my birthday benefit in their calendar section. They even requested a photo so be on the lookout next week!

Odd, but good (I think): Mommy was on her way to C.O. Bigelow tonight and stopped to smile and talk to an adorable Brussels Griffon. The brussels' human companion smiled and asked, "You're Lenny's mommy, right? Your website is great!" Mommy was stunned and a bit startled, not because the brussels' human was scary in any way, shape or form, but because she is not used to being a "recognized" personality in the neighborhood. I, on the other hand, am fully aware of my appeal and burgeoning popularity with Village folks.

Needless to say, my mommy is still both flattered, stunned and a bit regretful.

Flattered: In a city as large as New York, to be recognized and verbally "welcomed" is a rarity. And to know that our website is not only being viewed by thousands of people, but actually making an impact on them is positively AMAZING!

Regretful: Due to mommy being a bit flustered by being recognized, she did not interact with the brussels' human as well as she should and could have. Normally, she would have stood on the street corner and asked hundreds of questions about the adorable pup, how they had found our website and promoted my birthday benefit in person. But, due to being struck "dumb" momentarily, she did none of these things. (She should have taken me with her. I would have known exactly what to say and do!)

I guess my mommy doesn't like the spotlight as much as I do. The moment cameras come out, she ducks behind me. I don't think this is a bad thing, however. We compliment one another. I like the spotlight and being the "face" while she enjoys doing all the backstage work. We couldn't accomplish our goals of helping our animal community without one another.

What are mixed tocopherols?

Thanks to another fabulously fun (and for the first time, informative) Pug Meetup event at Happy Paws yesterday, I now know that mixed tocopherols is basically a fancy name for vitamin E compounds. Thanks to our friends, Anthony and John, at Nutro 20 New York City pugs are even more intelligent today than they were last week. If you could imagine that?!

Anthony gave a wonderfully simple, straight forward and yet entertaining (Pugs in costume could make a Senate hearing enjoyable!) 10 minute Power Point presentation in which he simplified the most commonly found ingredients on dog food labels. Our group applauded Anthony's creativity for locating and compiling dozens of fabulous pug photos from the internet.

Afterwards, Anthony and John presented our group with a table overflowing with complimentary Nutro goodies: 5lb. bags of Natural Choice kibble, Natural Choice A du lt Dog meat pouches and cans of their new Natural Choice Healthy Desserts. Everyone went home with HUGE goody bags chock full of yummy treats and there was enough left over for Anthony and John to donate four cases of meat pouches to my 2nd Annual Birthday Benefit for Animal Haven.

With so many delicious options, what did I choose? Enquiring minds want to know! I prefer to limit my meat intake to free-range, organic offerings so I opted for the new Natural Choice Healthy Desserts. At only 100 calories per yummy can, I am able to indulge in my own desserts without the guilt!

Have you ever sat nicely at your mommy's feet looking ever so adorable knowing that at any moment she will give you a bite of the delicious looking dessert she is currently devouring and receiving not a single crumb? I have and I know you have too!

Well friends, it is time we taught our humans some manners! It is simply not appropriate behavior for one to indulge in something delicious and not offer your companion at least a tiny taste.

Okay, okay, so we as canines have a much more limited range of acceptable indulgences given the fact that chocolate is toxic (what an uber-bummer!) and that many dogs suffer wheat, soy and corn allergies. Given those limitations, I set out to find delicious, indulgent treats that my mommy could serve both me and my friends while she entertained her human buddies with chocolate and flour filled confections.

In my search I found two fabulous companies. KDK Gourmet Dog Treats offer carob brownies, mini cupcakes and carob peanut butter cups that have the texture of their human counterparts and are tasty enough to tempt mommies and daddies. While I lament the passing of all my adorable Gund friends, I would rather see humans draped in their fluff than know millions of helpless animals were slaughtered for their pelts.
